If you are considering counseling for yourself or someone you know you might have questions about who I am, how counseling works, how to set up appointments, and how payment works. I hope this website answers your questions and helps you decide the best course for you.
My counseling practice is located in Corvallis, Oregon. I provide online counseling sessions through a secure video program when meeting in person is not possible. I work with adolescents over 18 and adults, primarily in individual therapy. My practice is typically quite full. I will try to schedule with you as soon as possible, but it may take up to 4-6 weeks for a time to open up.
Credentials
I began my private practice in 1988, and have also been a therapist on two college campuses and for several other agencies. I received a bachelor's degree in Human Biology from Stanford (1980). My masters and PhD in counseling psychology are from University of Oregon. I was licensed as a psychologist in the State of Oregon (#1218) in 1996.
Scope of practice
I help people with a wide variety of concerns including: depression, anxiety, family or relationship issues, trauma, loss, eating and body image problems, and difficulty making life decisions and achieving goals. I work to build a collaboration that draws on the best of you and the best of my expertise to address your concerns. It is my intent in each session to help you know yourself better and learn tools and practices that lessen your distress and enable you to live the life you want for yourself.
Therapy approach
My approach uses many different therapy tools depending on what works best for you. I am trained in emotional processing, cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic theory, gestalt techniques, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), guided imagery, mind-body strategies, and trauma desensitization and reprocessing approaches such as EMDR. Always, I conduct therapy with the intention of offering a safe, supportive space. Your satisfaction with the work we do is my priority.
Length of treatment
The length of therapy treatment is variable, depending on the problem area and how you want to approach it. Clients might come for 6-12 weekly sessions and then return as needed. Others use therapy for a longer stretch of time. I work normal office hours, but do not offer evening or weekend appointments.
Cost and insurance
Payment is arranged individually. If you are using insurance to help cover the costs, my billing service will bill directly for you. Insurance does cover online video as well as in person sessions. You will be responsible for deductibles and copays at the time of session unless otherwise arranged. You are ultimately responsible for the costs of therapy, should there be any problem with your insurance company.
I work with most insurance companies. Please check with your company to get specifics on your policy, deductible, co-pay, and whether I am an authorized provider with them. While I am in-network with some, I am not with others.
